Invited by the President of CCOM Wang Cizhao, Lorin Maazel, Music Director of the Munich Philharmonic Orchestra and Former Music Director of the New York Philharmonic, visited CCOM and gave a master class in the Concert Hall of CCOM on May 3rd, 2013.

President Wang attached great importance to Maestro Maazel's visit and made careful arrangements for the event. The President's Office and the International Affairs Office organized the activities and the Vice President Zhou Haihong, on behalf of CCOM, accompanied Maestro Maazel during his visit in CCOM.

Maestro Maazel visited the teaching building first. He watched students' rehearsals and also sat in some students' tutorial. String Quartet "Amber," consists of Ning Fangliang, Su Yajing, Qi Wang and Yang Yichen, played the first movement of Debussy's String Quartet No.1 for Maestro Maazel. Maazel gave the quartet warm praise and encouragement, and guided the students on some playing details and music understandings. In the class of Conducting Department, Maazel gave more instructions to the conducting major students and discussed some academic issues in conducting with teachers and students of the Conducting Department. In the end, he readily wrote an inscription for them and took a group photo with them. In the Traditional Instruments Department, the Sheng-Feng ensemble played The Flowing River (xiaohe tangshui) and The Interests of Beijing Opera (jing qu'er), a bamboo flute major student Hu Shuai played Birds in the Forest (yin zhong niao) for Maazel. Maestro Maazel became very interested in Chinese national instrumental music. He asked more about the Sheng-Feng ensemble and the details of instruments (such as the shape, register, and playing skill) that they played. He also discussed the organization of a Chinese Instrumental orchestra and other issues with teachers and students of the Traditional Instruments Department.

Later, Maestro Maazel came to the Concert Hall of CCOM. All seats of the Concert Hall were occupied. The students and faculty members of CCOM expressed their admiration and welcome to Maazel with their warm applause. Maestro smiled and waved to everyone. Conducted by Xia Xiaotang, a faculty member of Conducting Department of CCOM, the Central Conservatory Orchestra rehearsed the first movement of Beethoven's Violin Concerto in D Major. The violinist Chen Xi played the solo part. Mr. Maazel praised the orchestra's rehearsal. Then, he gave a master class to two conducting major students, Li Yue and Lai Jiajing, and the orchestra. At the kind invitation of all teachers and students, Maestro Maazel conducted the Central Conservatory Orchestra. His graceful conducting made a more charming performance of the orchestra. In the end, all audiences thanked Maestro Maazel's rigorous teaching and his rich interpretation of music with the most enthusiastic applauses.
