Ph.D student of CCOM Cheng Huihui Wins the Grand Prize in the Isang Yun International Composition Prize 2011 in Korea

Cheng Huihui, a Ph. D student of CCOM in composition, won the Grand Prize in the Isang Yun International Composition Prize 2011 in Korea. Her advisor is Professor Jia Guoping.

The Biennial Isang Yun International Composition Prize has become a quite influential international competition in recent years. It was presented by the Isang Yun Peace Foundation. To commemorate the renowned Korean composer, Isang Yun (1917~1995) and his artistic heritage and to encourage young composers, the Isang Yun Peace Foundation in Seoul and the International Isang Yun Society in Berlin have organised the 'International Isang Yun Music Prize 2007' in Seoul. From 2009, the title will be changed to the 'Isang Yun International Composition Prize' to focus its purpose on the composition. In 2011, the competition attracts many contestants from all over the world. The Jury Panel consists of five jurors: Younghi Pagh-Paan (Korea/Germany), Tang Jianping (China), Chaya Czernowin (Israel/USA), Robert HP Platz (Germany), and Toshio Hosokawa (Japan). After the selection, five final compositions were performed in the Seoul Arts Center on September 14th, 2011. The compositions are:

Shining -Huihui Cheng(China)
The Plain of Grasses and Sapphire-Sumio Kobayashi(Japan)
The Manhattan Distance-Carmine Emanuele Cella(Italy)
Fragrance of Baekje-Stephen Yip(Hongkong China);
Background Music for Fundraising Event- Yair Klartag(Isael)

In the end, Cheng Huihui's composition, Shining, won the Grand Prize; Japanese contestant Sumio Kobayashi won the Gyeongsangnam-do Special Prize; and Isael contestant Yair Klartag won the Audience Prize. Shining was finished in 2010. It is Cheng's graduation composition for her Master degree. Her Master's advisor is Professor Jia Guoping.
