CCOM Student Hao Yilei Wins the First Place in the 8th Giorgos Thymis International Piano Competition in Greece

In the 8th Giorgos Thymis International Piano Competition in Greece, Chinese competitor Hao Yilei won the First Place. He is a piano student of the Central Conservatory of Music in Beijing and his advisor is Professor Shao Dan. Hao became the first Chinese competitor to win this Competition. At the same time, he got the opportunity to hold three solo concerts and one concert with a symphony orchestra in Europe.

The Giorgos Thymis International Piano Competition, which began in 2002, is a memorial to the great Greek conductor, pianist and composer Giorgos Thymis (1924-2009) in the second half of the 20th century. The Competition is also the member of the League of Geneva World Musical Competitions and the world-renowned Alink Argerich Foundation. In the 8th Competition, there were total 42 candidates selected to participate in the Competition. The competitors came from Russia, Byelorussia, Israel, Spain, Germany, the United Kingdom, Italy, France, China, South Korea, Japan, Brazil, etc. The Chair of the Jury was well-renowned pianist Cyprien Katsaris, the members of Jury consisted of a number of world famous pianists, including Georrgios Konstantinidis, Nora Loukidou, Jura Margulis, Uwe Matschke, Glenn Riddle, Eliso Virsaladze, etc.

From January 12 to 20, the Competition lasted 9 days in three rounds. In the first and second rounds, the repertoire should be different solo pieces. In the third round, the repertoire should be concerto composition accompanied by orchestra. In the evening of Janurary 20, all seats were occupied in Megaron Music Hall of Thessaloniki. Hao Yilei and the State Symphony Orchestra of Thessaloniki, conducted by well-renowned conductor Jiang Jingbo from Taiwan, performed the Piano Concerto No.5 "Emperor" of Beethoven for over 1400 audiences. The excellent performance of Hao received warmly applause. After the competition, the Chair of Jury Cyprien Katsaris evaluated/commented that Hao Yilei was not only an excellent pianist, but a rare and outstanding musician! His performance is such an unforgettable performance!

First Place: Hao Yilei (Central Conservatory of Music in Beijing, China)
Second Place: Lu Xingyu (Hanover University of Music, Drama and Media Hannover, Germany)
Third Place: Mariya Anikina (Russian pianist, teaching in Lucerne School of Music, Switzerland)
Fourth Place: Danilo Mascetti (Italian pianist, concert artist in New York)

In an interview, Hao Yilei stated that it was a luck chance to participate in a high level competition as this. It was also the result of working hard and good fortune to receive the First Prize finally. At the same time, he thanked all teachers who taught him and all helpful friends accompanied him on his way chasing the music dream. He would repay his school CCOM and society with more and more wonderful performances in the future.
