Former Non-degree Student of CCOM Yu Huidong Wins Golden Prize in the International Violin Making Competition of Conservatorio Santa Cecilia di Roma

On October 9, 2016, the International Violin Making Competition of Conservatorio Santa Cecilia di Roma closed in the Music Hall of Conservatorio Santa Cecilia. Chinese competitor Yu Huidong won the Golden Prize of Violin Section in the Competition. On the award ceremony, all the guests congratulated him with warm applause.

The history of the International Violin Making Competition of Conservatorio Santa Cecilia di Roma could be traced back to 1900. In the Competition in 1920, the Competitors included a number of violin making maestros in modern times of Italy, such as Ornati, Garimberti, Sacconi, etc. The Competition was discontinued since 1961.

In 2016, supported by the Chair of Italian Violin Making Association Gualtiero Nicolini, Italian Violin Making Association and Conservatorio Santa Cecilia di Roma jointly hosted the International Violin Making Competition of Conservatorio Santa Cecilia di Roma. There are three groups which  were included in the competition: Professional Modern Violin Making, Antique Violin Making, and a group for violin making amateurs. There are four sections in each group: violin, viola, cello and bass. There are over one hundred string instruments which made by violin makers from 24 countries that participated in the Competition.

The Competition started at October 6 and ended at October 9, 2016. Then, the exhibition of participating string instruments was held from October 10 to 25, 2016. The Competition will be held every three years.

The Jury of the Competition consisted of five violin makers and four string players. They are violin makers Florian Leonard (Britain), Zheng Quan (China), Carlo Vitori (Italy), Luca Primon (Italy), Suzuchi (Japan); and string instrumental players De Bonfilis (violin), Maorizio Massarelli (viola), Massimo Paris (cello), and Massimo Giorgi (bass) who are the teachers of Conservatorio Santa Cecilia di Roma.

Yu Huidong, former non-degree student of CCOM, worked with Professor Zheng Quan for three years after he finished his study in CCOM. In 2013, Yu Huidong won the Silver Prize of Cello Making section in the 2nd Chinese International Violin Making Competition; In May 2016, he won the Gold Prizes of Violin Making section and Viola Making Section, and a Silver Prize of Viola Making Section in the 3rd Chinese International Violin Making Competition. The Gold Prize of Violin Section that Yu won in the International Violin Making Competition of Conservatorio Santa Cecilia di Roma is his third Gold Prize in 2016. Yu Huidong is a violin maker who was trained in Mainland of China. He has no advanced study experience in abroad. The success of Yu Huidong symbolized the success of violin making training in China. The Chinese violin making circles are encouraged by this successful case.
