STSI Bandung Visits CCOM and Donates Gamelan Instruments to CCOM

On the afternoon of June 18th, led by the President of STSI Bandung Enoh, the artistic delegation of STSI Bandung (SEKOLAH TINGGI SENI INDONESIA BANDUNG) visited CCOM and presented an excellent performance at the Recital Hall of Multi-function Building of CCOM. Professor Zhang Boyu, the Chairman of musicology department, Professor Chen Ziming, the renowned world music scholar, and other faculty members and students of CCOM attended the concert.

At first, Mr. Enoh, on behalf of STSI Bandung, delivered a speech. He pointed out that, with the assistance of Indonesian Embassy, they could have this joint concert with the students of CCOM at the new recital hall in CCOM. They believed that this cultural event was not only the event of two institutions; it would also make the two peoples closer. At the same time, he announced that STSI Bandung decided to donate their gamelan instruments to CCOM after their performance on June 21th at the Indonesian Cultural Festival in Beijing.

Professor Zhang and Chen also delivered speeches to thank for their donation. They all emphasized that music would improve the understanding between two peoples. The joint performance would be a good beginning for the further cooperation between two institutions. They said that we were looking forward to starting the gamelan performance class soon in our school. Then, Professor Chen Ziming, on behalf of CCOM, awarded the Donation Certificate to Mr. Enoh. Professor Zhang Boyu also presented gifts to the members of the delegation.

The concert was consisted of two parts. The first half included pipa solo Dragon Boat and sextet ensemble Arranged Indonesian Folk Songs, performed by the students of CCOM; the second half included six gamelan ensemble and dance compositions, such as Degung, Tari gawil, Tari Srikandi Mustakaweni, etc., performed by the artistic delegation of STSI Bandung. These excellent performances brought to the audiences great artistic enjoyment.

The gamelan instruments donated by STSI Bandung, including saron, bonang, gong, kenong, kendang, suling, etc., mainly belongs to the genre of Gamelan Degung, a Sundanese musical ensemble in West Java Province. With these new instruments in Javanese Gamelan style, the gamelan collection of CCOM, which includes one set of Balinese Gamelan instruments, has been enriched. We believe that the beautiful gamelan instruments will show off their charms again and again under the hands of CCOM students on the stage.
