Eugene Onegin Brings the Ninth Music Festival of the Central Conservatory of Music to a Successful Conclusion

On the evening of Dec. 20th, 2009, in Tian Qiao Theater, the curtain on the stage dropped slowly in the cheers and applauses from the audiences. Opera Eugene Onegin came to a successful end. By then, the Ninth Music Festival of the Central Conservatory of Music was formally concluded. The classical Russian opera Onegin was not only the closing performance of the Ninth Music Festival of CCOM, but also the commemorative concert of "the 60th Anniversary of the Sino-Russian Diplomatic Relations," "the 130th Anniversary of Classical Russian Opera Eugene Onegin's World Premiere," etc.

Mr. Hua Jianmin, the Vice-Chairman of NPC Standing Committee and the Chairman on the Chinese side of the Sino-Russian Friendship, Peace and Development Council; Mr. Li Jianping, the Vice Presidents of the Chinese People's Association for Friendship with Foreign Countries and The Sino-Russian Friendship Association; Ms. Wu Yin, the Vice President of Chinese Academy of Social Sciences and the member of the Sino-Russian Friendship, Peace and Development Council; and other leaders, as guests, were presented at the performance. CCOM's Honorary President Wu Zuqiang, the President Wang Cizhao, the Secretary of Party Guo Shulan, the Vice Presidents Xu Changjun, Jiang Xiao'ai, Ye Xiaogang, etc. also attended the performance. 

Before the performance, the sponsor showed a document film, which introduced the fruitful achievements of Opera Center of CCOM since it has been founded at 2004. This year, the Russian version of Eugene Onegin is Center's fifth opera, joint-made by the Opera Center of Central Conservatory of Music and Moscow Tchaikovsky Conservatory. Therefore, it was also an important commemorative event of "the 55th Anniversary of the academic exchanges between CCOM and MTC." In addition, the students of Beijing Dance Academy and the custom, lighting and stagecraft staff of China National Opera House also participated in the performance.

On the evening of Dec. 20th, the renowned Russian conductor and the professor of opera singing department of MTC Pavel Lando conducted the Youth Symphony Orchestra of CCOM. The beautiful arias in the opera, such as Tatyana's long monologue when she was writing letter, Lensky's aria before the duel with Onegin, and the duet of Tatyana and Onegin in the final scene, etc., left deep impressions on the audiences.  

After the performance, the whole performance team took a long time curtain call in the prolonged applauses of the audiences. When the renowned soprano and music educator, the Director of Opera Center of CCOM Guo Shuzhen stepped on the stage, the audiences stood up and warmly applauded. All paid heartfelt tribute to Professor Guo for her outstanding contributions to the development of Opera Center of CCOM and vocal education in China. 

From December 11th to 20th, the Festival has presented 22 performances to the teachers and students of CCOM and the audiences in Beijing. These performances included several prize winners' recitals and prize winning works concerts, some excellent concerts presented by other music conservatories in abroad and renowned music groups, and the teaching achievements of a new field of world music performance teaching-multi-cultural music concert by the students of musicology department, etc. This year's successful Music Festival demonstrated the combination of academic and arts, showed CCOM's leading position in Chinese music educational circles through the achievements revealed on academic, teaching, research, and communications among music conservatories at home and abroad. The festival gradually featured openness and internationalized. Along with the continuous improvement and development, the Music Festival of Central Conservatory of Music is not only a grand occasion of Chinese music education, but also will be an important academic event in international music circles.
