2015 Beijing International Composition Workshop (BICW)


Conversation and interaction between the East and the West
A gathering of renowned and promising composers and musicians
The innovative international composition workshop in China

The Central Conservatory of Music in Beijing will host the 2015 Beijing International Composition Workshop. The 10-day workshop will be held in Beijing, July 18-26, 2015 as the fourth annual workshop that gathers excellent faculty and promising composers from all over the world. During the intensive 9-day programs, the fellow composers and faculty will meet in individual lessons, composition seminars, faculty lectures, conducting class and rehearsals, as well as two culminating concerts, to present their works, exchange ideas, and explore creative notions and means. In addition, as a special component, Chinese cultural and musical heritage will be presented in lectures and panel discussions, on the topics of Chinese traditional instruments, Chinese folk music, as well as Chinese contemporary musical tendency.
Eight new pieces composed by eight composers Category A will be jointly performed by French L'INSTANT DONN? Ensemble and Beijing Modern Chamber Ensemble. Each piece will be held the open rehearsals, and will be evaluated and guided by all BICW professors and conductor.

PROGRAMS
-Lectures and master classes by BICW faculty composers and conductor

-Individual Lessons with each BICW faculty composer
-Group meetings with each BICW faculty and guest composer
-Presentations by each composer Category A, with panel discussion
-Workshops of advanced and extended technique on Chinese and Western instruments 
-Open rehearsals of the new works with BICW faculty composers, conductor, and musicians
-Two premiere concerts of new works by the composers Category A, which will be performed by L'INSTANT DONNE chamber ensemble in France and recorded. All composers Category A will receive a recording of the work premiered.
-Forum: Discussions about music and humanity

TO APPLY
Three categories of composers will be selected regardless of age and nationalities including:

a) Eight [8] composers Category A
-Tuition: RMB 5,000yuan (USD$850)
-Attend 2015 BICW all activities except composition group meetings
-Eight presentations by the composers Category A
-Selected as composers Category A are asked to compose a new chamber work and are required to attend all rehearsals and could slightly revise the new works during rehearsal sessions if necessary.

-BICW New Music Award:
-The jury will select the winning works after the premiere of the new works by the 8 composers Category A, and give announcements of the following awards:
One First Prize (award: RMB 5,000 yuan)
Two Honorable Mentions (award: Certificate of Merit)

b) Twenty Five [25] composers Category B
-Tuition: RMB 3,500yuan (USD$550)
-Attend 2015 BICW all activities except composing, rehearsing, and premiering the new works, and presentations: individual lessons, group meetings, lectures, concerts, and sit in presentations and open rehearsals

c) One hundred and twenty [120] auditors Category C.
-Tuition: RMB 2,000yuan (USD$350)
-Audit 2015 BICW all activities except individual lessons

Tuition fees must be paid in full before workshop starts on July 18, 2015. Tuition does not include accommodations. Composers Category A, composers Category B, and auditors Category C will need to pay accommodations by themselves. BICW will recommend hotels and restaurants as reference.

Tuition fees should be paid via the following methods:
Applicants from outside of China, pay the tuition to the Central Conservatory of Music bank account. BICW will also inform the selected composers category A, composers category B, and auditors category C with the detailed bank information of the Central Conservatory of Music via email.

APPLICATION PACKAGE
Composers who apply to Category A can also apply to Category B and C;
Composers who apply to Category B can also apply to Category C;
Composers may apply as auditors Category C directly.
BICW Committee will suggest applicants who are not selected into Category A and/or B to participate to BICW as auditors Category C or withdraw the workshop, according to the applicant's application form.


APPLICATION TO COMPOSERS CATEGORY A
Submit the following application materials via email, with the title "2014BICW+ name of applicant (Category A)" to beijingicw@163.com:
-Resume (English and Chinese version, if applicable)
-One recent work in PDF version
-Recordings of submitted work in mp3 or CD format
-Photocopy of Identity Card or passport
-Application form signed by the applicant
-Score of the new chamber work for 5-9 instruments(each Instrument one player) chosen from the following instruments: flute (doubling piccolo),clarinet, Violin, Viola, Violincello, Piano, Percussion(Vibraphone,Wood Blocks,Gong,Glockenspiel,Triangle,Snare Drum,Bongos, S.Cymbal,Chinese Cymbals/Nao Bo,Bells);
-Chinese instruments (selected from pipa, zheng, Dizi, er hu, [doubling zhong hu], and sheng). Duration: less than ten minutes.
-Deadline for receiving applications (including the proposal, program notes: before 18pm June 22, 2015 (NOT postmark).
-If electronic submission of the application materials is not applicable, hard copy should be included
-Selected composers Category A will be notified by email on June 26, 2015. The name list will also be posted on the website of the Composition Department of the Central Conservatory of Music at http://www.ccom.edu.cn/ & http://en.ccom.edu.cn/.
-Deadline for receiving the completed new works: before 18pm June 22, 2015 (NOT postmark). Submit one hard copy of bounded full score (in proper size), including program notes, and one hard copy of a set of unbounded parts (in letter or A4 size). In addition, please submit PDF version of full score and parts via email as well.
-No application fees


APPLICATIONS TO COMPOSERS CATEGORY B
