CCOM Celebrates Its 70th Founding Anniversary

In autumn 2010, a fruitful season, the Central Conservatory of Music celebrates its 70th anniversary of founding. Mr. Li Lanqing, the former member of the Political Standing Committee of the CPC, the former Vice Premier of the State Council, wrote the inscription of "Ai Yue (Love Music)" for the 70th Anniversary Celebration of CCOM. Ms. Liu Yandong, the member of the Political Bureau of the CPC Central Committee, the State Councilor, sent a congratulatory letter to CCOM.

On the morning of November 1st, with their deep affection and tender regards, over thousands of alumni and guests gathered from all over the world in the Concert Hall of CCOM, including the officials of Chinese Musicians Association and Beijing Musicians Association; the presidents and heads of Shanghai Conservatory of Music, Central Academy of Fine Arts, Renmin University of China, National Taiwan Normal University, Chinese University of Hong Kong, Yale School of Music, China National Symphony Orchestra, China Philharmonic Orchestra, Shanghai Symphony Orchestra, China National Opera House, Beijing Symphony Orchestra, etc.; and CCOM's professors, former leaders, staff, and students.

The 70th Anniversary Ceremony was hosted by Ms. Guo Shulan, the Secretary of the Party Committee of CCOM. First, President Wang Cizhao delivered a speech titled "Carry Forward the Fine Tradition and Create a Better Future." In his speech, President Wang reviewed the founding history and summarized the features of CCOM. Then, Mr. Xu Peidong, the Vice President of Chinese Musicians Association, Professor Robert Blocker, the Dean of Music School at Yale University, Professor Zhao Talimu, the President of China Conservatory of Music, Mr. Tan Dun, the renowned composer and graduate of the Class of 1977, Professor Zhou Qingqing, the teacher of musicology department, and Jia Xiaojing, a piano student of CCOM, on behalf of the music institutions at home and abroad, alumni, faculty members, and students, made speeches successively. They made their congratulatory words to this special holiday and wished school a brilliant future.

The next was the award granting ceremony. President Wang Cizhao granted the Certificates of Honorary Academician to Professor Robert Blocker, the Dean of Yale School of Music, and Mr. Yu Long, the Artistic Director of China Philharmonic Orchestra. Then, he granted the Special Contribution Awards to Mr. Xu Xiaoping, the Chairman of New Oriental Education & Technology Group, the President of New Oriental Cultural Development Research Institute, and Mr. Piao Longhua, the Chairman of the Board and Chief Executive Officer of WSP Holdings Limited; granted Excellent Artistic Achievements Award to renowned pianist Lang Lang; granted the Personal Sacrifice Award to Mr. Huang Xudong, the Vice President and Secretary-general of Xiao Youmei Music Education Promotion Association; granted Honorary Awards of Staff to Wu Zuqiang, Huang Feili, Cheng Yuanmin, Peng Ming, etc. (totally 181 staff members).

The alumni from Hong Kong presented a crystal quadripod to the Central Conservatory of Music as a congratulatory gift for the 70th Anniversary Celebration.

In the end, solemn and warm celebratory ceremony was finished in the powerful and grand fourth movement, "Ode to Joy," of Symphony No. 9 by Beethoven (performed by China Youth Symphony Orchestra of CCOM and Youth Chorus of CCOM, conductor: Lin Tao).
